How a driveway goes in

Concrete fails from underneath. That is where the job starts.

Step one

Tear-out

Old, heaved or cracked concrete comes out in full: broken up, loaded and hauled off. Lawns and beds next to it are protected, not driven over.

Step two

Base

Then the ground under it. Cut to grade and prepared so the new slab sits on a solid, even base instead of the soft spots that cracked the old one.

Step three

Forms & steel

Forms go in at the final lines and heights. Reinforcement goes in where the job calls for it: a tied rebar grid on a porch, mesh under a commercial slab.

Step four

Pour & finish

Ready-mix arrives, the crew screeds and floats it, and the finish goes on. Broom finish for driveways and walks so they are not slick when wet. Stamped or textured for patios.

Step five

Cure & winter

New concrete keeps gaining strength for about a month. Cars stay off a new driveway for the first week, and no de-icing salt at all the first winter. Sand for traction. That habit adds years.

Porches, stoops and steps go 42 inches down under the Michigan Residential Code, or they heave every spring.

0psiThe mix

The standard strength for outdoor concrete in a freeze-thaw climate. Ask any contractor what mix they order. The answer should be a number.

0%Air content

An air-entrained mix gives freezing water room to expand. Without it the surface pops and flakes. That is the spalling on old driveways.

0saltThe first winter

No de-icing salt on new concrete its first winter. Salt keeps the surface wet and freezing over and over. Sand for traction, shovel early.
